Well, the holidays were bad to me. Wayyyy too fat. Time to bear down and see if I can drop those excess pounds and see if I can start to get into fighting shape for the upcoming season. I have been training fairly consistently the last two weeks and trying to adjust to life with osteoarthritis in the left hip.
I've been a good boy. Instead of running every day, sometimes twice, I have been taking running free days and so far the hip has been OK. Of course, I expect this will result in some very weak running times in 2012 but we'll see what happens. Stiff upper lip and all that rot.
If you are in the Tundra area in February there are two events to consider and chances are you will see me there.
Feb 5 - Hamel 5K
A very low-key 5K in which there are no awards given. There is no chip timing so be sure to bring your own watch if you want to record your time. Click here if you want to see the course (Garmin) and read about the results from 2011. The whole Maas family will be at this event this year, a first. The race web site can be found here.
Feb 11 - Stone Cold Cupid Snow Shoe
This is yet another event by Final Stretch. I contacted race director Mark Bongers this week and he indicates that if there is a lack of snow the event will become a trail run. This is something the whole family is considering at this time. Per their race site:
This is the first year that Final Stretch has hosted the Stone Cold Cupid Snowshoe race. The course consists of a 3.5 mile loop winding through the trails of Terrace Oaks Park in the center of Burnsville, MN. The trails are normally utilized as cross country ski trails and will be groomed prior to and after the snowshoe race event. You can choose from a 3.5 mile one loop, a two looper for an extreme 7 mile race or bring your significant other and share in the fun and each do 1 loop...you choose who gets to go first.
The route is scenic and challenging with a good amount of hills, fast flats, and open terrain.
All races will be chip timed by Final Time using the Championchip timing technology. Chips must be returned immediately after your race is finished at the finish line chute. Fees will apply if chips are not turned in!
We will have access to the park pavilion, which is located just east of the parking lot. We are also going to have a bonfire just outside the pavilion near the finish area so you can warm your toes pre and post race. Hot beverages will be served for all participants as part of the registration package, and the park will also supply hot cocoa and other edibles to everyone at an extra cost. Snowshoes must be worn to participate. There will be no exceptions.

Looking Past Maple Grove to Bismarck
Next Saturday (8/27) is the second annual Maple Grove Triathlon event. I'm not going to do any pre-event right up. This event has enough shameless self promotion as it is. As I stated last year, the event goes to great extremes to tour itself as the greatest thing since sliced bread. And as I stated afterwards, it is a nice venue and provides fantastic awards. I just wish they would tone down the rhetoric a bit. And trust me.....I'm not the only one saying that.
This blog entry is going to be about something that I am looking forward to much, much more. The Bismarck Marathon/Half-Marathon/5K on September 17. Let me explain why I have this one circled in red on my race calendar.
Yes, I'm sure you are getting tired of me reminding you that I experienced a pretty serious injury earlier this year. Back in March, it was confirmed that I suffered a pelvic stress fracture. I even shared with you the gruesome pictures, such as this one:
I shared with you that I had even run a 5K, taking 2nd overall, before I knew I had this injury. I had simply run through the pain. Then it was twelve (12!!!!) weeks of not doing a damn workout to try and heal the fracture. And this was to have been my year, when I would breakout and be a regular finisher on the 50-54 podium. I mean, the year started out so well with a podium finish at a duathlon in Texas, followed by two consecutive overall second place finishes in 5Ks.
However, once I started training again I was determined to try and salvage as much of the back-half of the season as possible. So, I trained smart and strong during May-July. I entered as many races as I could, using them simply as speed work with the goal of 'hitting on all cylinders' by the time August rolled around. The early season tale-of-the-tape had success, near misses, and miserable failure:
• Jan 23 - Frost Yer Fanny Duathlon; Houston, TX (USAT) - 3rd in 50-54 AG (19 total)
• Feb 6 - Hamel 5K; Hamel, MN 2nd overall. 19:14 (6:12 per mi pace)
• Mar 1 - Pelvic Stress Fracture happens, but still unknown to me
• Mar 12 - Chase a Leprechaun 5K; Becker, MN 2nd overall. 19:36 (6:16 per mile). 1st in 41+ AG
• Mar 22 - Pelvic Stress Fracture Diagnosed
• May 14 - Lakes to Pines Triathlon; Park Rapids, MN 1st overall in Male Relay (I swam/biked and Boy® ran)
• May 28 - Apple Duathlon; Sartell, MN (USAT) - 36th overall (226 total). 1st 50-54 AG (12 total)
• Jun 5 - Pigman Sprint Triathlon; Cedar Rapids, IA (USAT) - 66th overall (648 total). 7th 50-54 AG (35 total)
• Jun 12 - 22nd Manitou Sprint (USAT) - 45th overall (251 total); 5th in 50-54 AG (20 total)
• Jun 19 - HyVee Rochesterfest Sprint Tri - 15th overall (153 total); 2nd in 50-54 AG (11 total)
• Jun 26 - Lake Waconia Tri (USAT) 68th overall (315 total); 3rd in 50-54 AG (24 total)
• Jul 2 - Minneman Triathlon; Oak Grove, MN (USAT) - 30th overall (342 total); 3rd in 50-54 AG (24 total)
• Jul 17 - Heart of the Lakes (Long Course) - 120th overall (383 total); 11th in 50-54 AG (37 total)
But I knew I was making progress. And I started to plan for the back half of the season. I learned about the Bismarck event and became intrigued. I have done the Bismarck Triathlon on several locations and loved the course. I was told the run route for the full and half-marathon was flat...as is everything in North Dakota. I started to think this would be an amazing carrot for me to dangle on a stick in front of me. If I could compete at a high level in the Bismarck event, that would be a very complete and fulfilling comeback from such a bad injury.
I talked with locale triathlon legend, Mike Fretland. I talked with my brother-in-law, Kim Hocking. Both live in Bismarck. They encouraged me to consider the race. So, I entered into the half-marathon. Then the floods came.
It has been a horrible year for weather across the USA, and North Dakota has taken the brunt of it. Fargo and Minot were both affected. And this year, so was Bismarck. For the first time since the Garrison Dam was constructed in 1954 the giant spillway gates were opened to release water from Lake Sakakawea and poured into the Missouri River and found its way down to Bismarck. Devastating flooding happened. And the run course....that nice flat run course.....had to be changed as the water is not expected to recede in time for the event.
As a result, the race map now looks like this. And, smack dab at the start of mile 5 there is a hill to climb. A one mile, 4% grade hill. We half-marathoners have to climb it only once. Gotta feel sorry for the full marathoners who get to tackle the hill twice on the double looped course. Here is the full course elevation map. The little blip you see twice....that's the hill (click on image for larger view):
I'm a home-grown North Dakotan. I wasn't about to bow out simply because of a little challenge. I have come so far since the injury that the challenge of this big hill has brought out the 'take no prisoners' mentality even more. Hey, I was a member of the 1977 & 1978 North Dakota Boys Cross Country champions for Jamestown. Member of the 1979 North Dakota State Indoor mile relay champions. My North Dakota sports history shows pain is nothing.
So, it was time to ramp up the ol' hill training. While I am not a good climber on the bike, I am the polar opposite when running hills. I love 'em. I intend to tackle this challenge like any other, straight on. This past Saturday (8/20), I headed out to Baker Park where I usually do all my cycling. From my riding, I knew a good hill that was about the same grade, only a bit shorter (0.65 miles) that would be perfect for some hill training. The day was beautiful, about 74F and light winds and blue sky.
I did a little warm up and then hit the elevation. Here is the elevation map:
My intention was to do at least 3 repeats and then assess. I felt good after the third and ended up doing two more. So a total of 5x0.65mi hills with easy recovery in between and easy warm down after. I wanted to attack the hill at about 10-20 seconds faster than race pace. The splits below show the hills being attacked in Splits 2-4-6-8-10:
I would have liked to have been under 6:30 pace for all five repeats, but this is a good start. And I ended up finding a dandy hill for repeats. Eight miles just flew by.
The other great thing about the Bismarck event: This will be the first running race in which I will be wearing the colors of the Fargo Running Company race team. I'm pretty excited about this opportunity and I thank Cley Twigg and Mark Knutson for allowing me to race with their team! My team uniform arrived this past week and it looks and feels great.
So, yes. I'm looking past the next few events to September 17. Still plenty of time to sign up if you want to join me out in North Dakota. The Boy® and the Well Kept Wife© are even getting in on the action by competing in the 5K event. Should be a grand day out for all of us.
Speaking of future events, I may have lied when I said the Turtleman and Maple Grove events would be my last multisport events of 2011. It could still turn out that way, but the current calendar (including confirmed and tentative events) now looks like this:
Aug 27 (signed up) - Maple Grove Sprint Triathlon; Maple Grove, MN (USAT) - 0.3mi swim, 14mi bike, 3mi run
Ended up 7th overall (301 total) & 2nd in 45-49 AG (16 total) last year. Hope to improve in the overall standing and also make podium in the 50-54 AG.
Sep 11 - CyMan Triathlon, Polk City, IA - 500yd swim, 14.3mi bike, 5K run
Last year I was 17th overall (204 total) & 1st in 45-49 AG (11 total). It was a VERY windy day. I would say its about 70% certain I sign up for this one, pending the Maple Grove result. I may need another high USAT score to have an outside chance of a national honorable mention.
Sep 17 (signed up) - Bismarck Half-Marathon
As above, this one is high on my A-Race priority ranking.
Sep 24 - Plymouth Fire Fighters 5K
Third overall the last two years. Would like to try for a Three Three-peat! And Plymouth is our home. Last year, I led for the first mile+ before finishing 3rd overall (401 total). 18:48 (6:03 per mile). It may be race day before I decide to go or not. Depends if I have recoved from Bismarck in time or not.
Oct 2 - Du the Bear Duathlon, Houston, TX 2mi run, 10mi bike, 2mi run
Really, really want to do this. Same course as Frost 'Yer Fanny that I did in January. Flat, flat, flat. And everyone is so fast you just get dragged along. I may need another high USAT score here depending on how my par score from Turtleman ends up in order to get into that elite top 10% nationally. I'd say it is 50-50 right now whether I do or not.
Oct 8 (signed up) - Fargo Mini Marathon 5K
Last year, I did the 10K Run and was 4th overall (637 total). 1st in 45-49 AG (15 total). 39:40 (6:23 per mile). This year, I'm opting for the 5K to run with not only the Boy® and the Well Kept Wife© but also my father. My day turns 70 in August. I have entered him (he doesn't know yet!) and will find out on his BD in a few weeks. He is always talking about his walking prowess and how many steps he takes.....now it is put up or shut up time!
Oct 22 (signed up) - Lincoln Family Downtown 5K; Phoenix, AZ
Another running event with a bit of a hill! Last year, I was 10th overall (367 total). 1st in 45-49 AG (12 total). 20:09 (6:30 per mile). We are all signed up again this year, & I intend to get it under 20-minutes this time on a very tough course.
Nov 12 - The Speedway Run, Ft. Worth, TX - 5K/10K
Last year, I jumped into the 10K on whim. Had gone down for Bronda's Du at the same venue (Texas Motor Speedway) held the following day. Ran easy at 39:55 (6:25/mi pace). 6th overall (121 total). 1st in 45-49 AG (9 total). Probably about a 25% chance of a return this year. If I do, I will opt for the 5K and save some legs for the du the next day. It all depends on money, available time off, and if Tim 'Buckwheat' Carroll is in Spain or not. Tim is my long-time Texas training partner. If he is not in Spain, then I say the chances of doing this double event weekend goes up to 50%.
Nov 13 - Bronda's Du (USAT), Fort Worth, TX - 2 mi run-15 mi bike-2 mi run
The day after the Speedway Run last year, I ended up 12th overall (212 total). 1st in 45-49 AG (20 total). Another flat and fast course with great depth in the lineup. I came away with a 87.94644 par score there last year.
Dec 11 - BCS Half-Marathon; Bryan-College Station, TX
The inaugural Full and Half Marathon for the place in which I spent three years of my life from 1987-1989 and started doing triathlons! It would be nice for a visit and also end the 2011 race season here doing a half-marathon. Home of the aforementioned Buckwheat. Probably 50-50 chance.

Potpourri Cornucopia
It has been just a mere eight days since our return from a fabulous London trip. This was my ninth trip there, the eighth as husband-wife and second with the Boy® in tow. And this might have been the best Brit Trip yet. Here are a few select photos (click on thumbnail for larger view):
The stress fracture didn't bother me much during the tons of walking while there. It did bother me during the football (OK, soccer) match with the Boy. So I know there is still some healing that needs to take place.
This has not held me back from swimming and biking, however. So after six weeks of no activity, I have returned to those two disciplines. I'm slow, no doubt. But the confidence is slowly returning. I estimate at least another seven to fourteen days before I even attempt running. So any time between May 1-15, I hope to be back hitting the running trails.
What this means in terms of events is TDB. Out for sure is the planned Arkansas Double Weekend (tri on Sat; du on Sunday) to celebrate the 50th birthday. The race director did let me know that he is doing the same concept again on June 11-12. Perhaps I can target that to participate in as I certainly would not be in compete mode by then.
Some of the other early season events and my chance of attending:
May 14 - Lakes to Pines Triathlon; Park Rapids, MN 500 yard swim, 14.7mi bike, 5K run
I rate my chances at 20%. The race director & I exchanged emails this past weekend since I have yet to sign up. I've done this great event every year since inception so they were wondering where I was. Even though registration closes on 5/9, the race director said I could show up the day of the race and he would still get me in. How nice is that? And I might have to show up so I can talk with least years winner, Mike Fretland of Bismarck, about his great 3:11 showing in the Boston Marathon.
May 28 (signed up) - Apple Duathlon; Sartell, MN (USAT) - 5k run, 33k bike, 5k run
Again, I rate my chances at 20%. Of course, it all depends on if I can run or not. I was really tagging this one as one of my key USAT du's for the year. Now it would simply be to get in a good workout as I continue to recover. I would certainly not be running with the Big Boys of the 50-54 AG.
Jun 5 (signed up) - Pigman Sprint Triathlon; Cedar Rapids, IA (USAT) - Swim .5K, Bike 25K, Run 5K
I rate my chances at 30% here as I should be running by then. This one would also fall into the participating rather than competing category, however. And it would give me a chance to connect with my Iowa tri-geek friends.
The Time Trial bike will be back in Minnesota any week now. It has been down in Texas since last November when I sent her down to live with my friend, Tim "Buckwheat" Carroll as I raced in Fort Worth to end the season last year and then opened up the 2011 season outside of Houston. The plan had been to meet up in Arkansas at the end of April and I would just take her back with me, but best laid plans and all that. Thanks stress fracture! It will be good to have the speed bike back in the corral so I can take that out and start to get in some harder speed workouts. That is, if spring ever comes!
Here is a handy discount if you have been thinking about ordering one of the Revenge Series fuel belts from FuelBelt. Use code USAT when placing your order and you will receive a 15% discount. I ordered a custom fit 2-bottle model this past week. Why? Even though I'm not sure when I can start to run & compete again, I'm in need of a carrot at the end of the stick to stay motivated. To that end I am thinking of:

| Beautiful gardens and estate of Hever Castle |

| At Stonehenge. A trip everyone should make. |

- Entering the Virgin Marathon (London) lottery on April 26 (my birthday) to see if I can be lucky enough to grab a spot in the 2012 London marathon. I said I would never run another marathon again, but that was back in 1989 and the body has just now forgotten how painful it can be.
- A half IM. Not sure when, this year is probably out. But enter into a half-IM and see how I can do. Could I go under five hours? I think with the right training, I could. Won't know until I try. Realistically, we're probably talking 2012 here.

Two More Speed Workouts Added
I located two running events in March that I'll be using strictly for speed workouts. I won't be leaving it all on the course at either of these events but rather give a 85% or so effort. When one trains solo, it can be hard to find the motivation to dig deep for a speed type workout. Always easier to pace yourself when running with others.
Mar 12 (signed up) - Chase a Leprechaun 5K; Becker, MN
Becker is a small hamlet west of the Twin Cities more famous for its huge furniture store. Close enough that I can sleep in a bit as it is a 10:30 AM start.
Mar 19 (signed up) - Get Lucky 7K, MPLS - 7K (4.52mi)
I like the distance. Especially with my first international event, a 10K in London, two weeks later. A 5K-7K tuneup should be just about perfect. And a cool finishers medal.
I encourage all of you to find local events as well to jump into and use for speed workouts prior to the big tri season starting in earnest. You don't want to hit your first true event of the season cold. And you are helping the local community and these race organizers by supporting their events.

2011 Events Update
This early in the season, a race calendar is a very fluid thing. Early season injury, weather playing havoc with your training, or Uncle Sam decides to take away half of your savings circa April 15. The reasons are many.
Gone from my race schedule:
Feb 20 - Texas Motor Speedway Duathlon; Ft. Worth, TX (USAT) - 2mi run, 15mi bike, 2mi run
I really wanted to do this, but my calf muscles are still sore from the Jan 23 race in Houston. And my Texas connection, Tim "Buckwheat" Carroll is not able to attend. And the race bike is in Tim's garage currently. Since I did this course in November, there is no need to rush back
Sep 4 - Hy-Vee Triathlon/5150 U.S. Championship; Des Moines, IA (USAT) - 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run
I might still bring this one back. But it is $150 big ones. It is on a holiday weekend. And I cannot get any confirmation that my DeSoto Water Rover wetsuit will allowed.
Oct 8 (?) - Fargo Mini-Marathon (10K); Fargo, ND
Another one that may circle back. But no official date has been set yet.
Oct 23 - 5150 Galveston; Galveston, TX (USAT) - 1.5K swim, 40K bike, 10K run
Like Hy-Vee, it is $150 big ones. And like Hy-Vee I cannot get any confirmation that my DeSoto Water Rover wetsuit will allowed.
Nov 13 - Rock 'n Roll San Antonio Half-Marathon; San Antonio, TX
Could come back as I most likely will jump in a late season half marathon.
One Click Away from making official:
Apr 2 - Miles for Missing People 10k; London, England 10K run and 2 mile fun run
OK, not sure if this will happen or not. But we have been toying with what I think would be our 10th trip to London over spring break. If it happens, then we'll make this race happen.
Apr 30 - Iron Mountain Du; Arkadelphia, Arkansas (USAT) 2.5mi run, 13.5mi bike, 2.5mi run
May 1 - Iron Mountain Tri; Arkadelphia, Arkansas (USAT) - 400 yard swim, 13.5mi bike, 2.5mi run
These two events, the du is held Saturday afternoon and then we return Sunday morning for the tri, are all but certain. I loved my time at this venue last year winning the overall Master's title. I look forward to the challenge of winning the overall Grand Masters title this time around. I plan to sign up in early April once I know I am for sure to be injury free.
May 14 - Lakes to Pines Triathlon; Park Rapids, MN 500 yard swim, 14.7mi bike, 5K run
The Well Kept Wife© was hoping to make this her first triathlon, but she needs to attend a niece's graduation instead. I have done this event every year since its inception and I am sure I will return this year. I'll hold off until April to register. Only question is whether the Boy® races in the kids event or stays back for family obligation. Note - this is the only non USAT triathlon on my calendar for a reason.....it is a great event.
July 16(?) - Jamestown (North Dakota) YMCA Duathlon
I was born in Jamestown and spent the first 23-years of my life there. I would love to go back to race there. If this race gets USAT sanction approval (a little bare foot birdie told me they are considering), I am so there.
Sep 11 - Cy-Man Triathlon; Polk City, IA (USAT) - 500 yard swim, 14.3mi bike, 5K run
I did this last year and enjoyed it. Nice course. I'd like to try it again and hopefully the wind will be a lot less.
Sep 24 - Sanford Roger Maris 10K/2mile Fun Run; Fargo, ND
Gotta hit Fargo at least once this summer to see family. And we can run as a family with the 10K and 2 mile offerings.
Oct 2, 2011 - Du the Bear Duathlon in Bear Creek Park near Katy, TX - 2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 2 mile run. On the same course as the Frost Yer Fanny event that I did on January 23.
Would be a nice way to end the multi-sport season. Would be a super fast course as this venue is pancake flat.
Locked and loaded:
Feb 6 (signed up) - Hamel 5K; Hamel, MN

Wetsuits and the 5150 Events
For those tuned into the new offering from the WTC called 5150, there will be a highly sought after new Olympic distance race series in 2011.
Registration opened on December 1 and I have my eye on the Hy-Vee Triathlon/5150 U.S. Championship (Des Moines, Iowa) and 5150 Galveston (Galveston, Texas). But for now, I'm holding back until I know if my wetsuit will be race legal or not.
Specifically, I use the De Soto T1 Water Rover wetsuit and am making darn certain it will be race legal for the 5150 events. Per USAT, these suits are race legal until 2013, but I wanted to make sure of that with the WTC so I sent them a note. I did get an initial reply back:
And for more information than you really need to know.....2011 is the year of the Rabbit. What will the rabbit bring us?

Hello Brian,So for now, I'm waiting. As soon as I have the nitty-gritty details, I will share with you other lovers of 10mm neoprene. Then you will know for certainty if you will be race legal or not.
Thank you for your email. We are currently working with USAT to determine which wetsuit rules we will be abiding by. More information will be posted online at www.5150.com before the end of the year. Thank you in advance for your patience.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Thank you,

And for more information than you really need to know.....2011 is the year of the Rabbit. What will the rabbit bring us?
The year of the Rabbit will be a placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger. We should go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year.I like that money can be made without too much labor. Because general entry for these events is $150. Man, I better not let the Well Kept Wife™ see this blog entry!
Good taste and refinement will shine on everything and people will acknowledge that persuasion is better than force. A congenial time in which diplomacy, international relations and politics will be given a front seat again. We will act with discretion and make reasonable concessions without too much difficulty.
A time to watch out that we do not become too indulgent. The influence of the Rabbit tends to spoil those who like too much comfort and thus impair their effectiveness and sense of duty.
Law and order will be lax; rules and regulations will not be rigidly enforced. No one seems very inclined to bother with these unpleasant realities. They are busy enjoying themselves, entertaining others or simply taking it easy. The scene is quiet and calm, even deteriorating to the point of somnolence. We will all have a tendency to put off disagreeable tasks as long as possible.
Money can be made without too much labor. Our life style will be languid and leisurely as we allow ourselves the luxuries we have always craved for. A temperate year with unhurried pace. For once, it may seem possible for us to be carefree and happy without too many annoyances.

Announcing 5150 | 5150.com
Fairly big news as a new International Distance triathlon series has been announced. Why 5150? Perhaps because 5150 is also code for "involuntary psychiatric admission" to hospitals?!?
WTC Launches New Global Event Series

Additional international race locations in Europe and Asia-Pacific will be announced soon.

More Events Added for 2010
A rolling stone gathers no moss. Or is that, Maas? In any event, I've now loaded up with four more events to an already promising 2010 season. Or should that read ambitious? The following four events have been added to my race calendar, which can always be viewed on the right side navigation area of this blog.
June 6 - Buffalo Sprint Triathlon - 1/4 mi swim, 13 mi bike, 3 mi run
This comes six days prior to the Liberty Triathlon, my first Olympic distance tri in over twenty years. So why do something the week before? Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near? A couple of reasons. One, I am going to wear 2XU Calf Guards during the competition.
These 'sleeves' can be worn during competition or used simply as a recovery tool. With similar benefits to compression tights but in a smaller package, calf guards improve circulation and protect against leg fatigue and muscle soreness. I have been wearing compression socks for recovery the last couple of years and am a great believer in them. I wore some compression socks in the Fargo Half-Marathon a few weeks back and am convinced they allowed my sore right calf to finish the race.
Jul 11 - Cornman Triathlon (USAT), Gladbrook, IA - 500 meter swim, 14 mi bike, 5K run
First, the name is cool! Cornman. Screw Ironman! Can you deal with the Cornman....can you?
July 17 (signed up) - Dubuque Duathlon, Iowa (USAT) - Run 1.2 Miles, Bike 17 Miles, Run 3 Miles
This is simple math. One needs two USAT sanctioned duathlons to qualify for end-of-year national ranking. I've got one in already and needed one more. Finding USAT sanctioned du's in the Tundra is tougher than one would think. Iowa is a neighboring state. The drive will be four hours. My alternative would be a trip to the south late in the year. Been there, done that back in April. This will du, er, do.
August 21 (signed up) - Young Life Triathlon in Detroit Lakes - 1/3-mi swim - 12-mi bike - 3-mi run
Did it last year, placing 5th overall. I think I can do better. Plus, the Boy® gets to spend quality time with the grandparents at the lake while the Well Kept Wife™ and I can find an eating establishment that doesn't have chicken nuggets or cheese pizza on the menu.

So, now I want to try them for a triathlon. And obviously you cannot wear socks into the water, so I'm going to try the sleeves. A good test tri before the oly. And I also want to get another swim in the new wetsuit, which I haven't worn since the Arkansas event in late April. In other words, the Buffalo event will be kicking the tires on some new equipment.
Jul 11 - Cornman Triathlon (USAT), Gladbrook, IA - 500 meter swim, 14 mi bike, 5K run
First, the name is cool! Cornman. Screw Ironman! Can you deal with the Cornman....can you?
Second, this event is the Midwest Special Qualifier which qualifies the top 33% per age group for the USAT Age Group National Championship in Tuscaloosa, AL on September 25, 2010. So, I'm curious how I can stack up in the 45-49 age group. Could I actually qualify for nationals? We'll find out!

More Events Locked In
As you may have observed, my blog posting has been down the last few weeks. I guess that is one sure sign that winter has passed here in the Tundra and I'm in full workout mode. Many others are as well. Shout outs to Adam Beston who took 2nd overall in a recent tri in Utah, shortly after his move there from Montana. Adam beat one of the two pros in the field.
Also shout out to Matt Marks who took 7th overall and first in his age group at the Iron Pig Duathlon in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Awesome job you guys.
Also some quick shout outs to Mario Minelli who seems to be back on target for the 2010 season after working his way through a mysterious hip affliction.
And to Chad Sayban in Arizona whose wonderful training blog had gone dark for a short while but is now back at it. If you have not visited his blog before, take a look.
I signed up for a few more events this week. And memo to the aforementioned Mr. Marks....I'm a'comin' to Razorback country. Bring on the Ozarks!

Some men celebrate their birthdays by getting wasted. Some by going to strip clubs. Me? I try to find a unique event to celebrate another year of life. And also to show the greater power that be that I still have a lot to give. Borrowing from Mr. Sayban's blog:
On my birthday weekend (April 26) here's what I'll be doing. Thursday (4/22) morning I begin a 927-mile....one way....drive to Arkadelphia, Arkansas. I'll arrive Friday afternoon. For what, you may ask?
The Iron Mountain Family Multisport Weekend. Here's the setup: On Saturday I'll be doing the Iron Mountain Sprint Tri which is a 400 Yard Swim/13.5 mile Bike/2.5 mile Run. Then I fuel up and come back Sunday for the Iron Mountain Sprint Duathlon which is a 2.5 mile Run/13.5 mile Bike/2.5 mile Run. In essence, it is a Tri/Du Stage Race. Not only is each race treated individually but times from the two days are combined for awards to be offered to the fastest combined times for the Tri and Du. Each is also USAT sanctioned. And best of all, former Texas triathlon and running training partner Tim 'Buckwheat' Carroll will also be making the journey to compete. More on this big weekend and the races as time draws nearer.
Some additional races have been added as well. So the 2010 Events/Results calendar (always found on the right navigation area of this blog) now looks like:
Feb 7 - Hamel 5K - 20:14 (6:30/mi pace). 5th overall. 1st in AG.
March 20 - The Nun Run 10K, Glendale, AZ - 41:32 (6:42/mi pace). 5th overall (195 total). 1st in 40-49 AG (21 total).
April 24-25 (signed up) - Iron Mountain Tri /Du Stage Race, Arkadelphia, Arkansas (USAT) - Sat Sprint Tri, Sun Sprint Du. Combined times.

This will give me four USAT sanctioned triathlons to be able to qualify for a national ranking at the end of 2010. Three are required. So, as long as I finish three of the four I should be good. Wanting to do as best a I can in each, of course.
And with the one USAT sanctioned duathlon in Arkansas, I'll only need one more USAT sanctioned du to qualify for national ranking. If you have a great du in your area...I don't care where you live!...let me know about it
Also shout out to Matt Marks who took 7th overall and first in his age group at the Iron Pig Duathlon in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"Life is NOT a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming: 'WOW, what a ride!!!'
May 15 (signed up) - Lakes to Pines Triathlon - 500 yd swim - 14.7 mi bike - 5K run
May 22 (signed up) - Fargo Half Marathon
June 5 - Grand Forks Duathlon - 3 mi run-15mi bike-3 mi run

Dearth of USAT Sanctioned Races in Minnesota
Yeah, I might get some flak for this posting...but you cannot deny it. There is really a dearth of USAT sanctioned races in Minnesota. Come to think of it, there really is a lack of races when compared to other spots in the country.
This it not to say we don't have excellent race directors here in the Tundra. We do. This is not to say we don't have excellent athletes, coaching and competition despite the fact we train wearing Russian fur hats eight months out of the year.

Lets take a look at two of the three Multi-Sport Informational calendar pages from the March issue of Runner Triathlete News out of Texas....where the sky at night is big and bright. Note - click on each image for larger view.

160 events in the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico,Louisiana region. The vast majority of them are USAT sanctioned (as indicated by the © symbol). Wow.
And what great concepts. Take, for instance, this 'staged' event taking place in Arkadelphia, Arkansas April 24-25. The Iron Mountain Family Multisport Weekend consists of a Iron Mountain Sprint Tri (400 Yard Swim/13.5 mile Bike/2.5 mile Run) taking place Saturday afternoon. Then you return Sunday morning to take part in the Iron Mountain Sprint Duathlon (2.5 mile Run/13.5 mile Bike/2.5 mile Run). The two can be done combined or singly. If you do both, you are then eligible for the Iron Mountain Tri/Du Stage Race. Custom Awards will be offered to the fastest combine times for the Tri and Du. Stock medals are offered for individual races.
Neat! But back to my rant.
To be ranked nationally in USAT for the 2010 season you will need to compete and finish two USAT sanctioned duathlons and three USAT sanctioned triathlons. If you live and race in Texas you will have this quota fulfilled by the end of April. Up here the ice hasn't even left the lakes yet.
This is not a rant about the weather, either. I'm fine with it. I know I won't actually retire up here but for the time being living in Minnesota suits me fine. But what I have been getting really upset about....and thus this blog rant....is:
1) Tell me exactly where there is a concise Minnesota race calendar in which it informs the athlete if the event is USAT sanctioned or not?
2) Why so few USAT sanctioned events, period?
And lets add in another question while we are at it...specific to duathlon. Tell me which Minnesota duathlons are USAT sanctioned? I'm not even sure a Minnesotan can actually get in two USAT sanctioned du's without traveling elsewhere. Yeah, I'm probably wrong. But after a week of contacting numerous race directors to inquire about their events I don't think I'm far from the fact.
Someone out there in Minnesota tri-land must have the knowledge and the time to put together a race calendar similar to what is show above and make sure it states USAT sanctioned availability. That's all I ask. Then I can stop ranting about this like a loony.

Crazy? First Half Of Season Possible Schedule

I'm toying with doing seven races over eight weeks for the front half of the upcoming 2010 triathlon season. I'm just not sure yet as I didn't want to do as many races as last year.....yet, this is so tempting.
I know what some of you will say: Enter but treat some of the races as speed training or a B/C event. Well, that's all fine and good. I will admit I have mellowed like fine wine as I now approach my 49th year. However, once the gun goes off my Type-A competitive nature takes over and I leave my guts out there on the course for everyone to salute. So, there are no 'easy' races for me.
Event 1 - May 15 (signed up) - Lakes to Pines Triathlon - 500 yd swim - 14.7 mi bike - 5K run
Event 2 - May 22 (signed up) - Fargo Half Marathon
One week break
Event 3 - June 5 - Grand Forks (Dewey Kvidt Memorial) Duathlon - 3 mi run-15mi bike-3 mi run
Event 4 - June 12 - Liberty Triathlon (USAT) - Oly Tri
Event 5 - June 20 - Bismarck Tri - 500m Swim, 20k Bike, 5k Run
Event 6 - Jun 26 (signed up) - XTERRA Pipestem Creek Off Road Triathlon - Swim 1000 meters, Mountain Bike 13 mi, Trail Run 5 mi
Event 7 - July 3 - MinneMan Sprint Triathlon (USAT) - 0.3 Mile Swim, 13 Mile Bike, 3 Mile Run
So what do y'all think? Go for it and see what happens? Are seven events too much to tackle over a eight week period?
The plus side is I would get in two of the three required USAT sanctioned tri's to qualify for national ranking in 2010. Risks include injury. I'm especially worried about how I will come out of the Fargo Half Marathon. That is the one event where I could 'shut 'er down', especially if I am not on 1 hour 30 minute pace at the 10-mile mark.
So, all you tri-geeks: Yea or Nay?

I Feel Sanctified
USA Triathlon has always had a rankings engine so triathletes can find out where they stack up against others in the their age group in the United States.
The rankings have been a valuable benefit for USAT members for several years. The system uses a mathematical formula to rank athletes according to their performances at USAT sanctioned events throughout the year, with the final year-end rankings determining All-America and Honorable Mention honors.
See the rankings engine in action at http://www.multisport.hangastar.com/RNK_Ranking_Report_Wrapper.aspx.
An athlete must be an annual member by December 31 in order to qualify for that year’s final rankings. In addition to membership, one must have competed in three USAT sanctioned triathlons to qualify for the final rankings. Other disciplines such as duathlon, aquathlon, and off-road are available and only require completion of two USAT sanctioned events.
Last year I competed in two USAT sanctioned triathlons and one USAT sanctioned duathlon so I fell short of getting an official ranking. This year, I'd like to change that. Not only that, I'd like to try and qualify for XTERRA ranking as well.
For XTERRA, one can enter as many races as they want. Your best four (4) finishes count. You must compete in at least one (1) race in your XTERRA Region of Residence and count at least two (2) races in your XTERRA Region Of Residence. Athletes do not have to qualify to participate in XTERRA Regional Championship Series races. Example: John finishes 2nd in one regional race. He gets injured and cannot compete in another regional race. He can simply count a zero for his second regional race and use his one regional finish and any other two finishes for your final ranking.
So, this is where I need your help. What are the sanctioned races out there that will allow me to complete my goal of completing three triathlons, two duathlons, and three XTERRA sanctioned events? They must also fit my current race calendar availability as follows:
May 15 (signed up, not USAT) - Lakes to Pines Triathlon - 500 yd swim - 14.7 mi bike - 5K run
May 22 (signed up) - Fargo Half Marathon
June 5 (does not appear to be sanctioned) - Grand Forks Duathlon - 3 mi run-15mi bike-3 mi run
June 20 (does not appear to be sanctioned) - Bismarck Tri - 500m Swim, 20k Bike, 5k Run
Jun 26 (signed up, sanctioned) - XTERRA Pipestem Creek Off Road Triathlon - Swim 1000 meters, Mountain Bike 13 mi, Trail Run 5 mi
Aug 22 (does not appear to be sanctioned) - Mandan Triathlon - Swim 500 meters - Bike 13 mi - Run 3.1 mi
Aug 28 (sanctioned) - Maple Grove Triathlon - Sprint or Oly
So, let's start with the duathlon calendar. I just need two races. Possibilities:
Saturday, May 01, 2010: Falls Duathlon
Cannon Falls, Minnesota Hannah's Bend Park
USAT sanctioned status unknown. AG is 40-49, not five year.
Sunday, September 12, 2010: Treadman Duathlon
Pine Island, Minnesota The park at Center Drive & 1st Ave NE
USAT sanctioned status unknown. AG is 40-49, not five year.
Saturday, September 25, 2010: Cannon Wells Duathlon
Faribault, Minnesota Shager Park on Cannon Lake
USAT sanctioned status unknown. AG is 40-49, not five year.
Can anyone verify if these du's listed above are USAT sanctioned? I could certainly be able to fit the Falls Du into my early season calendar along with one of the du's in September. Otherwise, going south to late season warmer climes such as Texas could be possible.
Onto the triathlon calendar. I need three races. Possibilities:
Saturday, July 3, 2010: MinneMan Triathlon
USAT sanctioned
Sunday, July 25, 2010: Chisago Lakes Triathlon - (Half + Sprint)
Chisago Lakes, Minnesota Paradise Park
USAT sanctioned
Sunday, August 01, 2010: Waseca Triathlon
Waseca, Minnesota Clear Lake Park
USAT sanctioned status unknown, but I know it was last year. AG is 40-49, not five year.
Saturday, Aug 28, 2010: Maple Grove Triathlon - Sprint or Oly
USAT sanctioned
These are possible and can fit into my current calendar. But I will have to make a decision fast as some of these fill up quickly. Otherwise, I fit in what I can and again look south if need be.
Finally, XTERRA. I am already signed up for one event which is not in my region of residence. Weird that North Dakota is not in the same region as Minnesota but there you go.
Mid West: (MW) = Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio,
Kentucky.
Mountain: (MT) = Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah,
Wyoming.
So, I need to find two (?) events in the Mid West region and find one last event nationally. Possibilities:
8/1/10 XTERRA Sugar Bottom, North Liberty IA, USA
1500m swim - a slightly crooked out and back
22km bike - pure single track goodness on the south half of the trails
10km run - equally pure and challenging single track on the north half of the trails
8/1/10 XTERRA Forest Drive, Aberdeen SD, USA
The Race Consists of a 1100 meter swim, 14 mile mountain bike and 4.5 mile trail run
8/14/10 XTERRA B.O.L.T., Lincoln, NE, USA
The Course consists of a 1000m swim, 21k mountain bike and an 8k trail run. But they specify no cross or hybrid bikes and not sure what that means. I plan to use the Cannondale Bad Boy which I think is OK.
Getting ranked for XTERRA would seem to not be very possible at this point. We'll see how that falls out. I may be content to do the one, my first, this year and see what 2011 may bring.
If you have a fav USAT sanctioned race that you think I should consider, please leave a comment and let me (and others) know. All suggestions welcome!
Note - Gear West put together a handy race calendar. It includes all races within a couple hundred mile radius of the Twin Cities.
